An investor who wants to open a position in the futures market is required to deposit an initial margin, which usually amounts to a percentage of the contract's total value and is deposited to cover market price fluctuations. At the end of each trading day, investors' accounts are adjusted according to the value of each contract or marked to market. If the initial margin deposit falls below a stipulated level after mark-to-market calculation, i.e. less than the maintenance margin, a margin call is issued and the investor must deposit additional fund to bring back the account to the initial margin level.
-
